This black Volitan lionfish is an impressive, slow-moving centerpiece, distinguished by its bold dark coloration, fan-shaped pectoral fins, and long, flowing fin rays. This specimen measures approximately 6 inches; as it matures, the species can reach around 15 inches, so plan for its adult size and provide a suitably spacious aquarium.

Pterois volitans is a predatory fish that may eat smaller fish and crustaceans, making tankmate selection essential. Its venomous dorsal, pelvic, and anal spines require careful handling and thoughtful aquarium maintenance. Keep hands clear of the spines, use appropriate tools when working in the tank, and avoid housing it with animals small enough to be considered prey.
