The Flamboyant Cuttlefish (Metasepia pfefferi) is a mesmerizing dwarf species renowned for its striking color-changing displays and intricate patterns. These intelligent cephalopods exhibit bold reds, yellows, and whites with rapid pulsing movements when excited or threatened, making them a captivating centerpiece for advanced aquarists. At 2–3 inches, this size is ideal for established nano and small reef systems with plenty of hiding spots and live rock. Flamboyant Cuttlefish are solitary and require careful tank mates—they're best kept alone or with fast-moving fish they cannot consume. These cuttlefish are carnivorous hunters that feed on small crustaceans and fish, offering unparalleled personality and behavioral interest. They require stable water conditions, moderate flow, and temperatures between 72–78°F. Handling is not recommended due to their delicate nature and potential toxins. Provide dim lighting and a sandy substrate to support their natural burrowing instincts. This is an expert-level species best suited to dedicated hobbyists with experience managing specialized marine life.
